The phrase ‘main character’ has been trending on social media a lot. Honestly, I am not very sure I understand the context correctly. But as I thought about that phrase, I sensed that I did not feel like the main character of my life most of the time. What do I mean? At different points of time during the day, my relationships took turns to become the focus of my attention. They seemed to occupy most of my time, attention, mind-space, and energy. I realized, there are very few moments in a day, where I am by myself, where I even know what my own energy is like.
The reason so many of us actually feel lost or confused is because our life is spent focusing on the different roles that we play in life and the actions involved as a result of them. Our energy is rarely rooted only in ourself. Most of us don’t know what our ‘I’ feels like. We do not know our own Self without other people’s energies being mixed with it. Sometimes when we do begin to sense our own energy or try to feel our it, we usually feel discomfort. Because we have never really spent time as just the ‘I’. The ‘I’ without any labels, the ‘I’ without any definitions. The ‘I’ that is not decorated, embellished or pushed into a role where it needs to shrink itself or behave according to the expectations based on that role.
What would it mean for us to be the main character of our life?
Even if you are on the spiritual path, before you can even know that you are not just a character, it is important to come to this place of being yourself. The main character is a singular me. The I. Because only when you learn to return to that space, can you really attempt to even go beyond that identity. It is almost like a consolidation. You need to come back into yourself, for you know your Self.
Let’s do this:
At the end of every day, just before you go to bed, run over the day in your mind. Mentally go over all the people you interacted with or thought about that day. It need not be everyone. Whoever pops to your head is fine. After you think of a person, just say in your mind – “I disconnect from your energies. I return to me.”
If there is an experience that disturbed/stressed/irritated/overwhelmed you, think of the situation and the people involved in it and say – “I disconnect from all the energies connected to this. I return to me.”
Then, just focus on yourself. If your thoughts wander, bring your attention back to your body and how you feel. Do this for a few minutes to start with. You can gradually increase the time spent doing this. Try this, to be the main character of your life.Try this to be the main character of your life..
